English Language Arts:
Building a Foundation for Lifelong Learning
At Venerini Academy, we prioritize the development of strong literacy skills through our comprehensive English Language Arts (ELA) program. Our curriculum is designed to align closely with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and is enriched by the Wit and Wisdom program, a research-based approach to literacy instruction.
Wit and Wisdom:
Our ELA curriculum is structured around the Wit and Wisdom program, which consists of four modules (units) per grade level. Each module focuses on a specific topic or theme, providing students with opportunities for cross-curricular integration, such as connecting with science and social studies concepts. Themes include oceans, space exploration, the American Revolution, and the circulatory system.
Authentic Literature:
Through the use of authentic literature selections, students engage in meaningful reading experiences. These carefully selected texts help build students' core and background knowledge while promoting a love for reading and a deep understanding of various topics.
Vocabulary Development:
Our ELA curriculum places a strong emphasis on vocabulary development. Students learn new words related to the module's topic, allowing them to expand their language skills and enhance comprehension.
Structured Routine:
A structured routine is followed throughout the program, ensuring consistency and familiarity for students. This routine supports the development of successful readers, writers, and communicators.
Assessment and Progress Tracking:
Wit and Wisdom incorporates an assessment system that tracks student progress throughout each module. This allows teachers to monitor individual growth and provide targeted support where needed. Students' fluency, comprehension, and writing skills are assessed and nurtured throughout the program.
In addition to the Wit and Wisdom program, our ELA curriculum includes Fundations, a research-based program used from Preschool to Grade Three. Fundations focuses on building foundational reading, spelling, and handwriting skills. Using a multi-sensory approach, students learn concepts of print, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, and word study. Unit tests are utilized to monitor student growth and ensure the acquisition of essential skills.
