Science:

Exploring the Wonders of the Natural World

At Venerini Academy, we believe that science education is a gateway to understanding the world around us. Our science curriculum, designed to align with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and hands-on exploration from Kindergarten through Grade 8.

FOSS Science (Kindergarten to Grade 5):

In our elementary grades, we implement the FOSS Science program, which emphasizes collaborative, active investigations of scientific concepts. Students are trained to observe real-world phenomena, gather evidence, and organize and record data. Through interactive science notebooks, students document their thinking as they try to explain the scientific phenomena they are learning. Informational texts are utilized to deepen students' understanding and mastery of scientific terminology and vocabulary. Ongoing formative assessments embedded within the teaching process help track student knowledge and guide instruction.

Grade-Level Topics:

Each grade level explores a range of engaging science topics, enabling students to build a solid foundation of scientific knowledge. Some of the topics covered include:

Preschool: Nature Observations through the Year

Kindergarten: Materials and Motion, Trees and Weather, Animals Two by Two

Grade 1: Sound and Light, Air and Weather, Plants and Animals

Grade 2: Solids and Liquids, Pebbles, Sand and Silt, Insects and Plants

Grade 3: Motion and Matter, Water and Climate, Structures of Life

Grade 4: Energy, Solids, Rocks, and Landforms, Environments

Grade 5: Mixtures and Solutions, Earth and Sun, Living Systems

Grade 7 and 8 Science: In Grades 7 and 8, our curriculum focuses on developing students' understanding of complex systems and phenomena.

  • Grade 7 students explore systems and cycles, applying their knowledge of structures and functions, connections and relationships in systems, and the flow of matter and energy. Topics covered include Earth's Systems, Earth and Human Activity, From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes, Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics, Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions.
  • Grade 8 students further develop their abstract thinking skills and delve into causes and effects of key natural phenomena and designed processes. Topics covered include Earth's Place in the Universe, Earth's Systems, Earth and Human Activity, From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes, Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits, Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity, Matter and Its Interactions, Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions.

Our science curriculum encourages students to explore, question, and analyze the world through hands-on activities, laboratory experiments, and research projects. By fostering a deep understanding of scientific principles and processes, we aim to cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a lifelong passion for scientific inquiry.
